Sports and Athletics at MPASS

Sports formed an essential part of life at MPASS and played a significant role in shaping the discipline, teamwork and resilience of students. The school recognised that education was not limited to the classroom alone,  but physical development and sporting excellence were equally important in nurturing well-rounded individuals.

Football and athletics were undoubtedly the most popular sports on campus. Inter-house competitions generated great excitement, fierce but healthy rivalry and drew enthusiastic support from students across the school. The football field became a place where talents were discovered, friendships were strengthened and school’s pride was displayed.

Many students actively participated in various sporting activities, including football, athletics, hockey, Table tennis and volleyball. Each sport had it’s dedicated players who trained diligently and represented the school with pride during competitions.

I personally had the privilege of serving as the goalkeeper for both the football and hockey teams. It was a role that demanded concentration, courage and quick decision-making. Standing between the goalposts required not only physical readiness but also mental strength, as the outcome of many matches often depended on the goalkeeper’s alertness and composure.

Our athletics team also made remarkable contributions to the sporting life of the school. Students with exceptional speed and endurance represented MPASS in track and field events. The immense potential and contribution in this regard of Kwakye Agyapong cannot be over emphasised. He started to represent the school as early as the second year of our five year academic life in Mpass. He participated in the 100m sprints and  gave sprinters from Persco and other schools on the kwahu ridge a good run for their money. He was supported in the later years by the likes of huge potentials like Alex Ntori (NAKPEE), ERIC Owusu (AKIDIMP),  Eugene Thompson(WABAM) who distinguished themselves in athletics and brought honour to the school through their performances in the sprints and relays. MPASS nurtured some  great potentials who went on to do great exploits in sixth form in other schools. AKIDIMP for instance became the fastest man in Eastern region and set a new record in 100 & 200 metres sprints that stood for more than a decade after our school years. Special mention is also made of Patience Siaw and Irene Thompson in the women’s sprints, Mercy Ofosu Asante in the high jump, while Emilia Ofori Danso will always be fondly remembered for her steady and calculated pace in the long distance races.

In football, we had David Oppong(King Gambo) AKIDIMP, Kwamena Essel, Peter Asiedu, Osei Emmanuel(Asaase Aban), Frank Okyere and Adade Yeboah both of blessed memory, our great Striker George Awuah, Samuel Somuah, Sylvanus Kpodonu, our dependable pair of hands in the goalposts. Together, they brought great pride and joy to our class and the whole school by  their exploits.

The school’s hockey contingent had many members of our year group forming the core of the team. Notable members included goalkeeper Sylvanus Kpodonu who we always  remember for his acrobatic exploits in all the sporting activities he participated in, Kwakye Agyapong, Simpeh Bediako(Sir NOBED) Stephen Addo (Abongo), Frank Opare (Wayenko) and many more. They won trophies in the district for the school, and represented the kwahu zone in regional and national competitions ahead of schools like Persco that was a  great team in the kwahu district.

Sports activities brought the entire school community  together. Students gathered around the fields to cheer their mates and compatriots with inspiring Jamma songs.

The sports script wouldn’t be complete without mentioning a three man jamma group of Clifford Amoako(Sexy Christo) Paapitee and Baah Owusu Joseph of blessed memory.  The passion and morale of the trio were unmatched. The group could lead students to sing a 24hr jamma session to support our sports teams. Anytime students travel on an excursions to other regions, the trio would represent to lively up the atmosphere. Osabarima Sexy Christo, we salute you and your team, for creating an atmosphere of excitement and unity.

Victories were celebrated with great joy, while defeats were accepted as opportunities for growth and improvement.

Beyond competition, sports taught us valuable life lessons. We learned the importance of teamwork, perseverance and fair play. These lessons have remained relevant in our lives long after leaving the school environment.
