Two-Day Orientation for Newly Elected Student Leaders
Venue: Old Dining Hall, Keta Business College
The Guidance and Counselling Unit of Keta Business College (KETABUSCO) successfully organized a comprehensive two-day orientation programme for all newly elected student leaders from Thursday 7th to Friday 8th August, 2025. The event was designed to equip prefects, club executives, and other young leaders with the knowledge, skills, and character required to serve the student body responsibly and effectively.
Purpose of the Orientation
The programme sought to:
Introduce student leaders to the core principles of servant leadership.
Clarify their roles and responsibilities within the school structure.
Provide practical strategies for balancing academic work with leadership duties.
Strengthen communication, conflict-resolution, and time-management skills.
Foster integrity, discipline, and respect for school policies.
Day One Highlights – Thursday, 7th August 2025
The opening session was chaired by the school’s Guidance & Counselling Coordinator, Counsellor Perez G. Aklasu, who welcomed the participants and outlined the objectives.
Key presentations included:
- Leadership and Its Importance – Madam Dinah Tagbor, Assistant Headmistress (Welfare & Domestic), emphasized the servant-leadership model and the need for empathy and vision.
- Channels of Communication – Rev. David K. Dzikunu, Assistant Headmaster (Academic), explained the formal communication pathways between students, staff, and administration.
- Goal Setting – Rev. Raphael E. Agbeleseshie, Dean of Students, guided participants in setting SMART goals for their tenure.
- Specific Roles and Responsibilities of Student Leaders – A panel comprising Mr. Peter Bani, Mr. Nelson Fiawornu, Mr. Innocent Dogbey, and Miss Taira Sodzedo provided detailed guidance on prefect duties, club management, and peer mentorship.
- Time Management – Mr. Mawuli Apetorgbor shared practical techniques for balancing studies with leadership demands.
- Student Advocacy – Mr. E. Sevor encouraged leaders to be the voice of their peers while upholding school values.
Interactive question-and-answer sessions followed each presentation, allowing participants to reflect on their personal leadership goals.
Day Two Highlights – Friday, 8th August 2025
The second day focused on personal discipline and conflict resolution:
- Ethics and Integrity in Leadership – Mr. Timothy Gborglah stressed honesty, transparency, and accountability.
- Combining Leadership with Academic Work – Miss Witness Kuagbedzi offered strategies to maintain excellent academic performance while serving.
- Conflict and Conflict Management – Counsellor Fedelia Kumazah taught practical methods for resolving disagreements peacefully.
- Stress and Stress Management – Rev. Sylvanus Yao Kpodonu, Chaplain and Guidance Team Member, shared spiritual and psychological tools for maintaining emotional balance.
The climax of the event was an inspiring address by Ms. Matilda Dzotefe, Headmistress of KETABUSCO, who commended the student leaders for accepting the call to serve and challenged them to “lead with diligence, humility, and a vision for excellence.”
In her closing remarks, Counsellor Aklasu, who also acted as Master of Ceremonies, urged participants to respect one another, work in unity, and be agents of positive change. Mr. Emmanuel Asiedu, Assistant Headmaster (Administration), officially declared the orientation closed with words of encouragement and a prayer for wisdom and strength.
Outcome and Recommendations
The orientation was well attended and highly interactive. Participants expressed gratitude for the practical lessons, pledging to model discipline, accountability, and academic excellence. The Guidance and Counselling Unit recommends that follow-up workshops and periodic review meetings be held during the academic year to monitor progress and address emerging leadership challenges.
